Synology 2019 Configuration Guide Part 3: 16GB RAM specs and how to upgrade your Synology DS918+

In this blog post I will show you how to upgrade the RAM on your Synology and give you choices on which one to buy.

Disclaimer: Memory upgrade will most likely void the warranty. Also, installing a new RAM memory on the DS918+ is very easy but you can still cause damage to it, so you have been warned.

Before we get started, if you are still thinking about which synology to buy, check this guide instead: Synology 2019 Buying Guide, but if you are the happy owner of a new Synology, here is a guide on how to configure your brand new Synology!!

Here is the list of upcoming posts:

  1. Install DSM in your Synology (operating system)
  2. Configure your hard drives: Storage pool configuration
  3. Upgrade your Synology RAM -this post

Enjoy!

Do I need to upgrade?

If you are following my Synology Buying Guide for 2019 you know now that I have bought a new Synology for managing my YouTube files as well as drone and gopro files.

Working with media files, requires a lot of “juice” from your computer or server and the DS918+ comes with only 2GBx2 of RAM, which is not great for the intended use.

The great news about it, is that you can upgrade your memory and unless my other Synologies, this time they made those slots accessible (hurrahhh!!), so in this blog post I am going to show you how to upgrade and which memory I bought.

If you are unsure if you need to upgrade, start moving some files in your drives and do some work and check the performance. On the other hand, RAM memory is very cheap nowadays so I would upgrade either way, but if cash is an issue, wait a little bit.

You are probably dying to use your synology , but I recommend you to do this before you start configuring things, because you will see blazing speeds afterwards when transferring files. Pointless to do that after you have done all “heavy lifting” right?

Pick a RAM maker and capacity

First things first, which RAM maker and capacity should you pick?

Lets talk about makers first:

The vast majority of the RAM in the world is made by Samsung, SK Hynix (Hyundai Electronics), and Micron (Crucial). Nearly every other brand of memory (Corsair, G.Skill, Mushkin, Kingston, etc) isn’t a manufacturer. They just buy DRAM chips from one of these three manufacturers, install it on to PCBs, and sell it to you as “their” memory.

So in general, as long as you buy from a brand which has a lifetime warranty, pretty much any memory is OK since they’re all using the same components. If you want “direct from the manufacturer” memory, Micron/Crucial is the easiest. They have their own retail branch, support, and memory finder tool. (Source)

Now, how much RAM should I buy?

This is an easy one: As much as you can afford and your system supports. For a Synology DS918+ the max memory is 16GB so I bought:

How to install your new memory in your NAS

Now that you bought your memory, turn off your NAS and disconnect it from everything.

Pull all the hard drives out,

Remove disks to add ram to your synology

And to your right, you will see the RAM.

To get the RAM out, you need to pull the “arms” holding the card OUT and the RAM will “pop out”:

Pull the RAM memory card out and proceed to install the new one.

To do that, you need to:

  1. Make sure that you align the card correctly
  2. Push and wiggle the card into the slot
  3. and finally, you need to push down the card until the “arms” snap back and hold the card. You should hear a “click”

Push the RAM card into the slot synology

And the same with the other one and you are done!!

And you have now installed 16gb ram in your synology

Put back the drives, connect everything, start your synology and cross your fingers…

If everything went well, you should see the new memory on the Info Center in the Control Panel:

  1. You’ve installed 1600 MT/s RAM – the NAS came with 1866 MT/s RAM – so should you not have used similar speed RAM?

      1. Your photo of the Crucial box suggest that it’s DDR3-1600, DDR3-1866 would have the product code CT2K102464BF186D

      2. This is the right RAM: Crucial 8GB Single DDR3 1866 MT/s (PC3-14900) 204-Pin SODIMM RAM Upgrade for iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015) – CT8G3S186DM
I Will Change the Link, thanks!

  2. But that’s not what you installed in the NAS, you installed DDR3-1600, not DDR3-1866 – I’m interested to know which one works – maybe they both work?

      1. I ended up getting the Kingston HyperX HX318LS11IBK2/16 – it was slightly cheaper and has a CL11 vs CL13 for the Crucial.

  3. Hi,
I tried to install the Crucial CT8G3S186DM module in my DS918+ (DSM 6.2.2-24922 Update 2); it fails to boot, simply sits there with the power LED flashing.

    I tried the original 4GB module + 1 8GB module, same thing.

Is there any indication Synology have updated DSM to check for “genuine” modules only?

    Tom
